Doing a world of good.

As a coffee company, we’re deeply connected to the earth, and we’ve set ambitious goals to protect it. Once we reach our targets, we move them farther out. Beyond making K‑Cup® pods recyclable, we’re ensuring they actually get recycled into something new. Beyond reducing the environmental impact of our products, we’re finding new ways to use fewer resources across every aspect of our business. We keep pushing harder and harder, because we’re passionate about leaving this world better than we found it.

Making strides to reduce our footprint.

To truly reduce our impact, we must look across our entire product life cycle for ways to use fewer resources and generate less waste — from reducing energy used in roasting to using polypropylene so our K‑Cup® pods can have a new life.

Having nearly met our waste diversion target, we’re focused on maintaining our successful diversion practices while working to find new ways to generate less waste in the first place and ensuring that more of what we do generate goes to recycling, composting, or reuse.

Our new polypropylene pods have a 27% lower greenhouse gas emissions factor than our original pods.

Amplifying our impact.

We can accomplish so much more when we work together. That’s why we’re collaborating with key partners who are as passionate about improving recycling as we are.

Using more recycled plastic.

As a Recycling Demand Champion, we’ve committed to increasing the amount of post-consumer recycled content (PCR) in products that we purchase.

Designing more sustainable packaging.

The Sustainable Packaging Coalition provides insights, benchmarking, and solutions that enhance the sustainability of packaging across the industry. We’re proud to have won their 2017 Innovator Award for our recyclability testing protocol.

Improving curbside recycling.

We’re honored to be part of The Recycling Partnership’sefforts to improve and energize curbside recycling through operational upgrades, technical assistance, and consumer education.

Improving recycling infrastructure.

We’re investing $5 million over five years in the Closed Loop Fund to support the expansion of recycling infrastructure and sustainable manufacturing technologies that advance the circular economy.

Standardizing recycling instructions.

The How2Recycle standardized labeling system clearly communicates recycling instructions to the public. We are empowering consumers through smart packaging labels as we roll out new products.

Meeting our water goal, drop by drop.

Water is essential to life — and coffee. That’s why we set an ambitious goal to restore the water used in our beverages with environmental projects that protect an equal volume of water. By the end of 2017, we met this goal — three years ahead of our 2020 target. We did it by improving water systems and agricultural practices in coffee communities. Closer to home, we partnered with groups working to protect farmlands, wetlands, and floodplains.

One of these efforts included a 78-acre parcel of wetlands and meadows along a creek near Lake Champlain. Birdcalls fill the air, and fish and ducks swim freely. All this might have been lost without a collaborative effort between The Nature Conservancy, the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department, and Keurig to conserve this valuable land. Just as critical, however, are the protections now in place on the property that reduce the threats of runoff and flooding, and ensure the quality of the water in nearby Malletts Bay.

Thinking beyond the pod.

We’re now shipping some models of brewers with “auto off” enabled, which reduces the amount of energy used.

We use polypropylene for our recyclable K‑Cup® pods because there’s a higher demand for it in new products.

We’re committed to zero waste to landfill at our manufacturing and distribution facilities with an aim to divert more solid waste to recycling and composting.

We’re looking at ways to use more post-consumer recycled plastic in our operations, packaging, and products — including our appliances.

We make it easy for workplaces to recycle their K‑Cup® pods and enable every component of it to go to another use.
